BA Art School “How to Build a Nail Bowl”

A friend of mine found this small cane syrup kettle in the river when he was building a boat dock.

It makes a perfect form for building bowls out of scraps of iron and nails.

step 1 : lay 4 nails in the bottom and weld together to make a base so the bowl will sit flat when it’s done.

Step 2: Randomly add more nails to build up the sides.

Step 3: Weld it all together. Then wack it loose with a hammer and flip it over and weld it again to reinforce it.

Step 4:  Set it in a bucket of water overnight to rust it up. Put it in halfway to give it a 2 tone effect.

Step 5:  Set it up on a stump for 2 weeks and let the rain rust it up some more.

That all there is to it. The end.

  1. Syrup kettle?

How much syrup could you make in that thing – a half a cup?

What do you think it really is/was?

  2. That’s beautiful, Butch! Thanks for the instructions. But now I have to learn how to weld.
